Memorial Day Weekend Part 1: Greenville, S.C.

I have been traveling a lot lately. I’ve had such a great time that I just have to share my adventures with ya’ll! For Memorial Day weekend, I went to Hilton Head Island, S.C. with my parents. I decided to split up the drive, because a nine hour drive from Nashville to Hilton Head was a bit too long for me! (I thought I could make the entire drive after work Friday night…HA.) So, I ended up spending the night at my parent’s house in Greenville, S.C.

Early Saturday morning, my mom and I took a three-mile walk on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. The trail is perfect for cyclists and pedestrians, and is one of my favorite place to get in some exercise when I visit. The trail runs 17.5 miles from Travelers Rest to Greenville.

I make sure to walk or bike the trail every time I am there. Of course, my mom and I were so excited that we completed our walk before 8 a.m. that we decided to take a selfie overlooking the Reedy River and Swamp Rabbit Trail downtown. (Yay for vacations!)

After our walk, we grabbed breakfast at Coffee Underground. It is a below-ground coffee shop in the heart of downtown with a great atmosphere. The coffee shop hosts local musicians, Open Mic Night Comedy shows and many other events. It is such a trendy place and I can’t wait to go back!

We decided to split an egg-white omelet with spinach, tomatoes and provolone cheese. It came with whole wheat toast on the side. I really enjoyed the omelet, but was most excited about what we tried next…

The H-B-P-P. The what? Yes, the H-B-P-P. Honey, banana, peanut butter and pecans on a whole wheat bagel. It was mouth-watering and the perfect sweet treat to start the day. I am so glad we split it though, because having the whole thing for breakfast would be a lot! We got the perfect balance of healthiness and indulgence by splitting both breakfast entrees.

Usually bagels are very large, but Coffee Underground’s are the perfect portion size. I also liked how they didn’t overload the sandwich with peanut butter.

After eating ourselves into a happy coma, we ventured back onto Main Street. One of the main reasons I wanted to go to Greenville for the first part of my trip was to go to the TD Saturday Market. The market is exquisite. It is one of the top farmer’s markets in the country! The Southeast Tourism Society (STS) name it one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast in 2012.

The market runs from May to October each year. Part of Main Street is closed to cars, and vendors of all kinds set-up shop with the freshest produce, dairy, meat and home-made goods that you could ever imagine. People flock downtown to get the best produce early, so it’s best to get there before it opens at 8:30 a.m.! We picked up some kale and honey wheat bread to take with us to the island.IMG_5378I was sad to leave Greenville but excited to get to the real vacation in Hilton Head. Tomorrow, I’ll update you on the rest of my weekend on the island!
